US Soldiers Court Martialed for Murder
Following an investigation, Maj. Gen. Thomas Turner of the 101st Airborne Division refers murder charges against the soldiers for the alleged crimes that occurred in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad, in March. Four U.S. soldiers are accused of raping and killing a 14-year-old girl and slaying her sister and their parents. British Army Head Calls with Withdrawal

60 Tortured Bodies Found
Iraqi police find 60 bodies, all showing signs of torture, dumped around Iraq's capital city. This drives the total number of bodies discovered in the week commencing 9/24 to 122. The day prior, U.S. Maj. Gen. William Caldwell notes a "tough week" and that murders and executions are now the leading cause of death in Baghdad.

Iraqi Citizens Firmly Against US
A University of Maryland survey is released showing that most Iraqis think the US presence in their country is doing more harm than good. 71 percent favor a commitment by U.S.-led forces in Iraq to withdraw in a year. It also indicates that six out of 10 Iraqis now actually favor attacks on U.S. forces.

Thai Political Meetings Banned

Tortured Suspect Exonerated
A commission of the Canadian Government exonerates Canadian computer engineer Maher Arar of any ties to terrorism and issued a scathing report faulting both Canada and the United States for his deportation four years ago to Syria, where he was imprisoned and tortured. The report said that American officials had apparently acted on inaccurate information from Canadian investigators and then misled Canadian authorities about their plans for Mr. Arar before transporting him to Syria.

US Generals See Iraq Civil War
General John Abizaid tells the US Congress that "Iraq could move toward civil war" if the raging sectarian violence in Baghdad is not stopped. Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed this likelihood when he also told the panel, "We do have the possibility of that devolving into civil war." He added that this need not happen and stressed that ultimately it depends on the Iraqis more than on the U.S. military. President Bush and Secretary Rumsfeld have refused to call the situation in Iraq a civil war, although Rumsfeld at a news conference on August 2nd acknowledged that the violence is actually increasing.

Iraq is presently suffering under a surge of violence with 100 people being killed daily.
