[29-Jan] A Palestinian suicide bomber hitches a ride from a wary Israeli motorist and then blows himself up inside a bakery in the Red Sea resort town of Eilat. It is the first Palestinian suicide bombing in Israeil in nine months time.    

Newsweek Bush Approval Rating 30%
[29-Jan] President Bush's approval rating stands at 30 percent in the latest Newsweek poll, the lowest approval rating recorded for the president in that poll's history.    

US Helicopter Downed Near Najaf
[28-Jan] An American helicopter was shot down in fighting near Najaf between gunmen and Iraqi forces backed by U.S. firepower.    

Iran's Plans for Iraq Unveiled
[28-Jan] Hassan Kazemi Qumi, Iran’s ambassador to Baghdad, outlined a plan to expand its economic and military ties with Iraq. This is likely to bring additional warnings from the United States.

[28-Sep] The US Commerce Department releases figures on the Gross Domestic Product, indicating a growth rate of 2.6% which is shy of the the 2.9% estimate.    

US Deficit Soars
[12-Jan] The Bush administration announces that US deficit spending in the 2006 budget would soar above $400 billion, well over the July forecast.

California Caps Greenhouse Gasses
[27-Sep] California becomes the first state to impose a universal cap on greenhouse gas emissions Wednesday when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signs into law a sweeping effort to curb global warming.    

NASA's Mission Statement Altered
[22-Jul] The public is made aware of the modification of NASA's Mission Statement. From 2002 until 2006, NASA’s mission statement was "to understand and protect our home planet; to explore the universe and search for life; to inspire the next generation of explorers ... as only NASA can." Dr. James Hansen, NASA climatologist, said the change might reflect White House eagerness to shift the spotlight away from global warming.    

Kyoto Protocol Goes Live
[16-Feb] The Kyoto Protocol that aims to slow down global warming takes effect without the participation of China or the United States.    

Coral Reefs Threatened by C02
[1-Feb] Israeli scientists at the Hebrew University of Jersusalem reiterate the prediction that increasing ocean acidity due to CO2 emissions will collapse the world's coral reefs in as little as 30 years from now. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem researchers say this will make it difficult for many coral organisms to produce skeletal and other hard parts.

US Execs Sentenced to Prison
[19-Sep] Dennis Kozlowski, disgraced former head of Tyco and his ex-finance chief Mark Swartz are sentenced to eight-and-a-third to 25 years in prison for stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from the company.    

Northwest Airlines Files Chapter 11
[14-Sep] Beleagured Northwest Airlines files for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11, just moments after a similar announcement made by Delta Airlines.    

HP Fires Fiorina
[9-Feb] Carly Fiorina, previously one of America's most powerful businesswomen, resigns her post as CEO of Hewlett-Packard following a dispute with the company's board of directors over future strategy and the firm's profitability. Ms Fiorina pushed through a controversial merger with rival Compaq in 2002 and HP has struggled since. Shareholders cheer her departure and lift the price of HP stock by 10%. Her resignation is effective immediately and CFO Robert Wayman replaces her temporarily.

[19-Sep] NASA delays landing the space shuttle Atlantis after engineers detect a mystery object outside the shuttle; weather at the Florida landing site also is a concern.

[24-Aug] Leading astronomers declare that Pluto is no longer defined as a planet.    

Senate Loosens Stem Cell Ban
[18-Jul] The United States Senate votes 63-37 to loosen President George W. Bush's ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. This is a move that Bush has indicated he intends to veto.

NTSB Finds Short Runway
[27-Aug] The NTSB announces that Comair Flight 5191 departed from a short runway not typically used by commercial jets before it crashed, killing 49.    

US Health Care Embarrasses
[8-May] In an analysis of global infant mortality conducted by Save the Children, Japan is found to have the lowest newborn death rate, 1.8 per 1,000. Four countries tied for second place with 2 per 1,000 : the Czech Republic, Finland, Iceland and Norway. Among 33 industrialized nations, the United States is tied with Hungary, Malta, Poland and Slovakia with a death rate of nearly 5 per 1,000 babies.    

Cuba Bans Smoking
[7-Feb] In recognition of the health risks of tobacco, Cuba bans smoking in public places, including all restaurants and cigarette machines will be removed. Government statistics now indicate that four out of every 10 Cubans smoke and that 30% of preventable cancers each year can be linked to smoking.    

Yawn: Yes, Juice Makes You Fat
[7-Feb] Jean Welsh of the CDC releases a study documenting that fruit juice is a leading factor in the obesity of American children. Its unfortunate that something so obvious, would still be released as news and/or research. Any time a natural food is processed by humans in an attempt to increase commercial shelf-life, that food's nutritional value will be weakened. The consumption of any food product in which the naturally provided fiber has been removed, and the sugar content concentrated will always yield sub-optimal results.

Hastert Declines to Resign
[3-Oct] House Speaker Dennis Hastert (Republican, Illinois) ignores a call by the conservative Washington Times newspaper to resign for his alleged role in covering-up the Mark Foley scandal. The most conservative Republicans are likely offended by Hastert's strong condemnation of Foley so close to the November elections.    

Abramoff's Numerous WH Contacts
[29-Sep] The House Government Reform Committee releases a draft report indicating that convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff had hundreds (485) of contacts with White House officials, which brought only limited success for his clients.    

Mark Foley Resigns from House
[29-Sep] Rep. Mark Foley (Republican, Florida) resigns in the wake of questions about personal e-mails he sent to a 16-year-old former congressional page. Ironically, Foley was a six-term congressman and co-chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus.    

Tom Delay Charge Reconsidered
[28-Sep] Texas’ highest criminal appeals court agrees to consider reinstating a dropped conspiracy charge against former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, likely delaying his trial on felony money laundering and conspiracy counts until next year.

Georgia Rep Needs Remedial Education
[27-Jan] Georgia Rep. Ben Bridges, a Republican, introduces a bill to prevent the theory of evolution from being taught in Georgia's classrooms by requiring that only "scientific fact" be taught in public schools, which in his mind rules out the theory of evolution. "It's in the book that it's a theory, but these teachers teach it like it's a fact," he said. "Let's teach them the truth or don't teach them anything." Democratic Representative Tom Bordeaux retorts "You mean, like the theory of gravity?"    

Intelligent Design & Evolution?
[24-Jan] High school students in the Dover Area School District of Pennsylvana are read a statement about "intelligent design" as an alternative to the theory of evolution. Richard Thompson of the Thomas Moore Law Center declared "This is the first step in which students will be given an honest scientific evaluation of the theory of evolution and its problems." Yet, students were not allowed to ask questions and no-one suggested that Evolution could very well be part of a truly intelligent design.    

Principal Suspended for Handcuffing Child
[15-Dec] The board of the Thurgood Marshall Academy, a charter school in St. Louis Missouri, suspended principal Sam Morgan after he had police handcuff a 5 year old and drive him around the block in a squad car, suggesting his likely fate should he not change his behavior.    

EIGroup: Next Diver Down
[14-Dec] EIGroup officers present "Next Diver Down" to the students of the International Community School in Decatur, Georgia. The presentation covers the motivation for Scuba Diving and Undersea Exploration and the science behind the equipment which allows recreational divers to swim with the fish at depths down to 130 feet.

2006 After US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld suggested that a US withdrawal from Iraq would be the equivalent of handing Germany back to the Nazis, Retired Major General Paul Eaton declares that Rumsfeld "has shown himself incompetent strategically, operationally and tactically, and is far more than anyone else responsible for what has happened to our important mission in Iraq." Eaton was in charge of training the Iraqi military from 2003 to 2004.
2005 On the second anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraqi, rebels gun down a police officer heading to work in the city of Kirkuk, then bombed the funeral procession carrying his corpse. Four police officers and a police chief are killed in total.
2005 Approximately 45,000 Britons marched from London's Hyde Park past the American Embassy to Trafalgar Square in protest of the US led invasion of Iraq.
