After launching from a base in Mexico, Fidel Castro and the 82 members of his 26th of July Movement land on the coast of Cuba's Oriente Province and initiate an attack on the Batista regime. Most are killed or captured, but 12 survivors including Casto, his brother Raul, and Che Guevara escape to the Sierra Maestra Mountains. There, after many successful guerilla attacks against the Batista, they gain the support of the people and grow to 3,000 men. |
