An F/A-22 Raptor assigned to the 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron crashes after takeoff at Nellis Air Force Base in the northeast part of the valley. The crash causes a black cloud of smoke to hang over Las Vegas for some time. The pilot ejects sucessfully, walks away from the crash site, and is taken to the base hospital. The stealth F/A-22 Raptor was unveiled in a special ceremony at Nellis Air Force Base in January of 2003. At the time, it is called "America's sharpest sword."
