US Submarine Runs Aground

    USS San Francisco
The USS San Francisco (SSN 711), a Los Angeles Class nuclear submarine, runs aground while conducting submerged operations approximately 350 miles south of the island of Guam. The incident occurred at approximately 4 p.m., Jan. 7, Hawaii Standard Time (12 noon, Jan. 8, Guam Time). Machinist Mate 2nd Class Joseph Allen Ashley, 24, of Akron, Ohio dies of injuries. There are no reports of damage to the reactor plant, and the sub makes its way back to Guam on the surface.
