US President George W. Bush awards the Presidential Medal of Freedom to ex-CIA director George Tenet, General Tommy Franks, and Paul Bremer, the former US administrator in Iraq. According to the Medal of Freedom Website, "this great honor is reserved for individuals the President deems to have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors [and is] given only after careful thought, always sparingly so as not to debase its currency." Both liberals and conservatives are critical of the President for turning a once meaningful medal into a photo-opportunity. |
