U.S. forces under the command of Col. Zachary Taylor defeat the Seminole Indians under command of Chiefs Wildcat, Alligator, and Sam Jones in the Battle of Okeechobee. U.S. casualties included 28 killed and 111 wounded. The Seminoles, outnumbered two to one, had approximately 11 killed and 14 wounded. During the battle, the Seminoles were forced to withdraw and retreated eastward. Because of heavy casualties, Taylor did not pursue. |
